Photo retouch adding lipgloss

In this Adobe Photoshop tutorial we will do some photo retouch, we will apply some warmth to the image then apply a rainbow lipgloss, and yes I know it might seem better to use a single color lipgloss, but I was just playing around with Photoshop while doing this tutorial, and this was the end result.

photo retouch lipgloss

The first thing we will do is to apply some warmth to the image, because the skin looks pale and cold, so go to image -> adjustments -> levels, and in this panel you will have to drag the 3 handles a bit closer to where the levels are high, this brings up the values of colors.

photo retouch lipgloss

Then go to image -> adjustments -> brightness and contrast and here you need to bring up the contrast a bit. (not much maybe just +20).

The last thing we will do here is to give the image some more red color, because her skin is a bit red, and her lips are red and we would like it to be a bit more colorful.

So go to image -> adjustments -> hue and saturations. in the roll down menu choose reds. then drag the handles as shown below.

This was the image before we did anything.

And now with the warmth adjustments.

photo retouch lipgloss

Now we will add the lipgloss. So make a new layer above the image layer and name it lipgloss. Now with the polygonal lasso tool click around the lips on the outer edges as shown in the image below.

photo retouch lipgloss

Again with the polygonal lasso tool, make sure you have selected "subtract from selection" mode. click the inner side of the lips as shown below, so we end up with only the lips selection and not the teeth.

Now make a graident looking like the one below, and drag it from left to right on the lips selection, so you get a result as below.

Find the blending modes roll down menu, its located just above the layers panel and set it to "hue".

This last part is a bit tricky, you have to use the dodge and burn tools to make light areas lighter and dark areas darker, remember to use a soft big brush so you dont get any sharp edges there.

But dont darken or lighten the lips too much, or else it might look to unrealistic.

Hi there all, the problem is Blending modes, as in the image (the small one showing the layers panel) next to the opacity, there is a dropdown menu, (right now mine is set to hue, yours might say Normal, locate hue and set it). did that help

Dino says: 2008-03-13

I have that problem too.. :(

Paula says: 2008-03-12

I canChr(34)t get through the last part how did you do that it looks like natural I canChr(34)t do it. NOOB here.

Dino says: 2008-03-12

Nice job whit the tutorial, but i canChr(34)t get it right at the last part. How did you get that graident layer into that other layer so it fit like on your picture. I realy donChr(34)t understand that part.

Abhishek says: 2008-03-10

Yeah........ItChr(34)s really good. IChr(34)ll like to do this experiment with my project.

hi Lan, the gradients can be found when you grab the gradient tool, then there will appear a toolbox at the top of the screen (just below the top menu).

Lan says: 2008-03-03
